Mongolian Beef

This is a simple Asian dish that is very easy make, requires only a few ingredients, and can be made in about 30 minutes.

  • Beef- for this recipe I used two steaks and cut them into strips, but an easy alternative would be to use the pre-packed stir-fry cuts of beef
  • Half a cup of brown sugar- use dark brown sugar for a richer flavor in the glaze
  • Half a cup of water
  • Half a cup of soy sauce
  • Sesame seeds
  • chives or spring onions
  • One teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a quarter cup of cold water
  • White rice

1) Prep the steaks by cutting them in half lengthwise and then again into half-inch strips- do your best to cut against the grain of the meat

2) Dice your chives or spring onions

3) Heat a pan or skillet over medium-low heat

4) Sear the cuts of beef for just about 5 minutes or so depending on how large the cuts are

5) Remove the beef from the pan and set aside

6) Reduce the heat to low and add the water and soy sauce to the pan

7) Mix in the brown sugar and let the mixture simmer down for a couple minutes

8) Stir in the cornstarch-water mixture to the pan- the cornstarch is important because it thickens the sauce into a glaze and mixing cornstarch with water is important because it keeps the cornstarch from clumping in the sauce

9) When the sauce has reached desired thickness, the beef can be mixed into the glaze

10) Serve with white rice and sprinkle sesame seeds and chives or spring onions
